Nesso and its Gorge
A village nestled between the waterfall and Lake Como
Situated along the eastern shore of the Como branch of the lake, on the road to Bellagio, Nesso is a destination well worth considering during a stay in Torno. A visit here offers a mix of views from above, walks through the village streets and a descent towards the shore, where the Ponte della Civera provides one of the most characteristic views of the village.
What to see in Nesso
The Gorge and the Waterfall
The Nesso Gorge is a natural gorge carved out over time by the force of the torrents. The rocky walls frame the waterfall, which flows through the village before reaching the lake.
You can view it from different angles: from Piazza Castello, in the upper part of the village, and from the area around the Ponte della Civera, near the water. The sound of the waterfall accompanies your visit and makes this corner of Nesso recognisable even before you see it.
The Civera Bridge
The Civera Bridge links the districts of Coatesa and Riva del Castello, near the mouth of the Orrido. The stone arches, the houses overlooking the lake and the waterfall combine to create one of Nesso’s most famous views.
To reach it from the upper part of the village, follow the streets and stairways leading down towards the lakeshore. It is a walk best taken at a leisurely pace, stopping to admire the details of the village and bearing in mind that the return journey involves a climb back up.
The streets of the village
The visit doesn’t end at the waterfall. With its narrow alleys, stone passageways and glimpses of the water, Nesso maintains a close connection with the landscape and its streams.
Do also take some time to explore the streets that link the upper and lower parts of the village. The route constantly offers new perspectives: from the lake to the houses, right up to the rock face through which the Orrido flows.
A walk to explore Nesso
Once you reach the lakeshore, take a break before continuing on your way. If you arrive by boat, you can start your visit in the lower part of the village and then make your way up through the village.
Decide how far to walk depending on the time you have and your preferences: even a visit focusing on the Orrido and the bridge will give you a taste of one of Lake Como’s most distinctive spots.
What you need to know before your appointment
The steps can make the route challenging for those with mobility difficulties or travelling with a pushchair. In such cases, it is advisable to check in advance which viewing points and routes are most suitable, without assuming that all access points are barrier-free.
How to get to Nesso from Torno
Travelling by boat also allows you to view the village from the water, but you should check that your chosen service stops at Nesso: services and frequencies vary depending on the season.
If you’re travelling by car, find a permitted parking space before setting off on your walk and check the local road signs.
