Como combines the pleasure of a stroll through the town with the chance to take in views of the lake. In the historic centre, squares, churches and pedestrianised streets guide you on a tour past shops and cafés; just a short walk away, the lakeside promenade offers sweeping views of the water and the mountains.

You can spend a day there during your stay in Torno, choosing from monuments, museums and walks. For a first visit, the town centre and the lakeside offer a route that is best explored on foot.

What to see in Como

The Cathedral and Piazza del Duomo

The Cathedral is one of the main highlights of the tour. The façade, the decorations and the interior tell the story of a building constructed over the course of several centuries. Next to the cathedral stands the Broletto, which completes the square’s skyline.

Piazza San Fedele and the streets of the city centre

Piazza San Fedele is another spot to include on your walk. The basilica and the buildings surrounding it preserve the historic character of this part of the city, which was once the site of the grain market.

From here, you can continue through the streets of the walled city, alternating between sightseeing and taking a break in the city centre’s cafés and bars. As you walk towards Porta Torre, you’ll come across one of the symbols of medieval Como.

The lakeside promenade, the Tempio Voltiano and Life Electric

From the historic centre, it’s just a short walk to the lakeside promenade, where you can enjoy a change of scenery. The walk offers views of the first stretch of the lake and takes you past several sites dedicated to Alessandro Volta.

The Tempio Voltiano houses a museum dedicated to the scientist. Continuing towards the breakwater, you’ll reach Life Electric, the contemporary artwork situated on the water. A visit to the museum and the lakeside walk can be organised separately, depending on how much time you have available.

Head up to Brunate to see Como from above

The funicular links Como to Brunate and adds a panoramic perspective to your visit. Once you arrive, you can stroll through the village and choose whether to continue along the local walking routes.

The Faro Voltiano is situated in San Maurizio, higher up than the funicular’s terminus: to reach it, you’ll need to make a further journey. If you’d like to include it in your itinerary, bear in mind the route and the time required.

Before setting off, check that the funicular is running and check the weather conditions, especially if your aim is to enjoy the view.

A walking tour for a day out in Como

If you’d prefer to head up to Brunate, set aside part of the day for the funicular and a visit to the village, cutting back on the other stops. Choosing just a few destinations allows you to appreciate Como without turning your visit into a whirlwind tour of the sights.

If you’re arriving in Como by car, find a suitable car park for your visit and check the access restrictions to the historic centre.
